Capital Cities. Images and Realities in the Historical Development of

European Capital Cities
This volume compares historical experiences from different capital cities of Europe. Eight cities are included. Amsterdam and Glasgow represent north-west Europe, from the central-east come Warsaw, Vienna and Budapest, and from northern Europe we have Helsinki, Oslo and Stockholm. Each city has its own history, and their back-grounds are very different. Irrespective of such variations we ask if capital cities are characterised by a special form of urbanity? Or are they mainly products of the regional, national and historical contexts to which they belong?
